85th Annual Golden Gloves

OPENS WITH HIGHLIGHT ON FEMALE BOXERS

WHAT:  As a special tribute to the 2012 Summer Olympics and the first Olympic boxing tournament to allow women to compete, the Daily News Golden Gloves will start the 85th Annual tournament with a fight between two female competitors. Opening Night for the 85th Annual Daily News Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament kicks off at B.B. King’s Blues Club & Grill in Times Square on Thursday, January 19th @ 7:30 PM.

With nearly 600 applicants, the competition is tough.  As it should be: the Daily News Golden Gloves is best known as the launching pad for many professional boxers and Olympic competitors, including world champions Emile Griffith, Mark Breland, Jose Torres, Floyd Patterson, Howard Davis, Riddick Bowe, three-time world women’s lightweight champ Alicia Ashley, and Kathy “Wildcat” Collins. Several Golden Gloves champions will be trying out for spots on the men’s and women’s boxing teams for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London this February – the Golden Gloves could be your opportunity to see them in action locally before they head to London.
The Daily News Golden Gloves tournament consists of 9 weeks of elimination bouts to be held throughout the New York metropolitan area.  A field of hundreds of fighters will be narrowed down through these bouts until the finals at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, to be held on March 29 and 30.
Advance tickets to Opening Night of the 85th Annual Daily News Golden Gloves can be purchased at the B.B. King’s box office by calling (212) 997-4555.  General Admission tickets are $25; $12 for ages 14 and under, and for boxers with a current active USA Boxing Passbook. Tickets can also be purchased at the door the night of the event: all ticket sales are subject to availability.
