Ronney Vargas Shot

Golden Gloves Boxer Shot Dead in The Bronx

Police were looking for the man who shot a three-time Golden Gloves champion early Saturday in The Bronx.

Ronney Vargas was gunned down about 3:30 a.m. Saturday after an argument with a group of men who fled the scene in a white car. It happened around 3:30 a.m. outside a bodega in the East Tremont section.

Detectives thought the fatal dispute might have been over a woman.

Police said the 20-year-old Vargas was shot once in the torso. The young boxer was pronounced dead at the hospital.

No arrests were made.

Vargas, a junior middleweight, attended Bronx Regional High School before turning pro in June 2007. He won each of his eight fights.
